Personal connection to Oncology Massage
In recent years, benefits and contraindications of oncology massage were unknown. Many thought massage would spread cancer, and massage therapists were warned to stay away from those with cancer. Today, research has shown that massage therapy may not cure cancer, but it has proven to be beneficial emotionally, physiologically and physically during and after cancer treatments. Massage may alleviate symptoms and side effects experienced by cancer patients, and is considered to be a supportive therapy.
In 2004, when I graduated massage school, research told me to stay away from massaging all people living with cancer. In 2011, my father was diagnosed with a Glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. As a “Daddy’s Girl”, the only thing I wanted to do was give him comfort, but my education and training had told me not to touch him. With permission from his oncologist, I started to massage my father gently and for short durations. To see him with out pain and a smile on his face, my heart sang.
After my father’s passing, I started my education with my first course: Massage for people living with cancer. This was the first step of my healing from grief. Since the beginning of my oncology massage training, I have had the privilege of assisting and educating massage therapists, cancer patients, Doctors, Chiropractors, and Acupuncturists on the benefits of massage therapy for cancer patients. I have directly seen the benefits from my clients from decreased insomnia, decreased pain, increased daily joy, and increased mobility.
